Tsunami warning is issued for Russia’s Far East
The quake initially registered at magnitude 7.5 around 11:30 a.m. local time, approximately 136 kilometers southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, as noted by the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Later assessments from other agencies measured the quake at magnitude 8.8.
“An absolute tsunami alert on the coast of Avacha Bay!” the Russian agency declared, urging residents to take immediate safety precautions along the Kamchatka coast.
Authorities issued a strong warning: “The wave height is not large, but it is NECESSARY to move away from the coast. Under no circumstances should anyone approach the shoreline to observe the tsunami – this could be dangerous,” according to the regional Emergency Situations Ministry.
Locals experienced intense shaking during the tremor, with reports of furniture moving, appliances toppling, and car alarms sounding throughout the area.
In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, damage was reported at a kindergarten where sections of walls collapsed, as shown in circulating footage. No casualties have been confirmed. The Emergency Situations Ministry noted that the quake’s intensity reached level 8 in parts of the city.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as aftershocks and potential wave activity remain a concern.
